Badminton: Ghana wins 2 bronze medals at Lagos Int Champs

 

Ghana won two bronze medals at the 3rd Lagos International Badminton Championship staged at the Teslim Balogun Sports Complex in Lagos, Nigeria.

Emmanuel Yaw Donkor grabbed a bronze in the men's singles event and also partnered Stella Koteikai Amassah to win the other bronze medal in the mixed doubles division.

For their effort, the two Ghanaian athletes received $1,000 as cash prize at the competition which brought together participants from 11 other countries, including Benin, Uganda, Egypt, Nigeria, Israel, Portugal, India and Sri Lanka.

Hosts Nigeria won five medals, two silver and three bronze.

Raul Yadav Chittaboina of India came tops in the men's singles after he defeated fellow Indian Karan Rajan Rajarajan 21-15, 21-13 in the final.

The women's singles competition was won by Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa of Sri Lanka who thumped Indian Mugdha Agrey 21-13, 21-19.

"I am very excited to win this competition. This is very important for me because it will help me build up more points for future tournaments," said Hendahewa in an interview.

For their rewards, 19-year-old Chittaboina and Hendahewa, 21, each received $2,200 as cash prize, a trophy and a medals.

The highest point of the five-day championship was a family affair as Israeli Svetlana Zilberman partnered her son Misha Svetlana Zilberman to win the mixed doubles competition.

The Israeli duo eliminated Ghana's pair of Emmanuel Yaw Donkor and Stella Amassah in the semi-final before snatching the ultimate from Duarte Nuno Anjo and Sofia Setim of Portugal in the final game to take home $1,500, a glittering trophy and medals.
