Ashanti hockey league bounces back Saturday

The Ashanti Regional Hockey League returns to action on Saturday after a long break, after it was truncated in its third session following strike action by university lecturers early this year.

The inclusion of a new club, Silver Sticks, takes the competitive clubs to six as the league has been reorganised to make it more exciting when it pushes off this weekend.

Silver Sticks was dissolved a few years ago to form Unique, but the team has now regrouped all its former stars, as players from the second cycle institutions in the region now form Unique.

The competing teams are Seniors, KNUST, Unique, Bibiani,  Royals, Silver.

Aware of the instability and uncertainty on the labour front, against the backdrop that the clubs are formed around students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and others from some second-cycles institutions in the region, the Ashanti Regional Hockey association has taken steps to address future eventualities that might occasion the suspension of the league.

Three tantalising fixtures for Saturday will see Seniors play Unique, KNUST clash with Bibiani and Silver Sticks lock horns with Royals at he grassless turf at the Baba Yara Stadium arena in Kumasi.

The president of the league, Yaw Boafo, is promising an exciting atmosphere as measures have been put in place to make the game more attractive to people around the stadium area.
