21 Ghanaian athletes in Gaborone for 2nd African Youth Games

With less than 24 hours to the start of the second Africa Youth Games (AYG), Ghana looks poised to make a huge impact in her debut appearance in Africa’s biggest youth meet.

A strong Ghanaian contingent arrived in Gaborone, Botswana, last Tuesday set for action.

 

SWAG Weightlifter of the Year, Juliana Arku, will be leading Ghana’s charge for laurels, together with Badminton Player  of the Year, Abraham Ayittey, sprinter Janet Mensah and 800m runner Martha Bissah.

Team Ghana, made up of 21 athletes and 10 officials, are on a mission  to make the country proud in six sporting disciplines, including athletics, weightlifting, badminton, swimming, table tennis and cycling.

Ten athletes comprising two weightlifters, five badminton players, two table tennis players, a cyclist and a swimmer  expected to join the team later in the week will compete in the various disciplines..

The competition, is reserved exclusively for athletes between the ages of 16  and 17 and billed to give the youngsters international exposure, and prepare them for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, later this year.

The Ghana Athletics Association and the Ghana Swimming Federation view the competition as qualifiers for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Ghana’s Chef de Mission for the AYG, Rev. Richmond Quarcoo, said:“Our team is doing well after arriving last Tuesday. There are no issues with accommodation, transportation, feeding and communication”.

“The weather condition here is quite different from Ghana.

 

“Our athletes have started final preparations in a bid to acclimatise to local weather condition”, he stated confidently.
