‘We didn’t pay our way to Brazil’

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports  (MOYS) have both disassociated themselves from an alleged bribery report published in an Accra sports weekly which suggested  that Ghana bribed its way to secure qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

In separate statements, the MOYS and the FA denied any such bribery in the final group qualifier against Egypt to secure qualification to the Brazil World Cup.

The FA’s statement described the report as “palpably false” and that neither it nor the Government of Ghana had budgets for bribes or condone bribery in any form.

“Such utterly wrong suggestion denigrates the hard work and achievements of the Black Stars players culminating in the historic and indisputable 7-3 aggregate victory over Egypt that secured Ghana’s place at the World Cup.

“The Black Stars players, technical team and management worked hard to secure Ghana’s place at the World Cup and as always we will continue to win our matches through fair means,” the FA stated.

In response to the alleged leaked document emanating from the ministry, which supposedly claimed the FA spent over $420,000 as “unclassified” and “indemnity” payments for the Egypt qualifier, the ministry stated that it never leaked any such document to the paper, especially as the facts contained in the said documents were discussed before the Justice Dzamefe Commission on the 2014 World Cup.

“Aspects of these are also in the Government White Paper issued subsequently, which is now a subject of litigation at the Appeals Court of Ghana.

“ I wish to reiterate that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is conscious of its responsibilities as a state institution,” concluded the statement signed by Otor Plahar, PRO of the ministry.
