WAFA maintain lead as Kotoko's winless streak continues

West African Football Academy (WAFA) continued their impressive run in the Premier League after defeating Bolga All Stars 2-0 at Sogakope to maintain the top position on the league log.

A goal in either half of their game gave WAFA the three maximum points as a 44th minute strike by Caleb Amankwah and Gideon Waja’s 67th minute goal ensured a sixth consecutive victory for the home side who are undefeated at the Redbull Arena since last season.

Second-placed Aduana Stars thrashed Tema Youth 3-0 at Dormaa-Ahenkro through goals by Noah Martey, Nathaniel Asamoah and Tank Mohammed Ismailo  to keep up pace with leaders WAFA, who have just a point advantage over the 2009 champions.

However, at the Malik Jabir Stadium, defending champions, Wa All Blacks, thumped Kumasi Asante Kotoko 1-0 as the home side held onto  Kweku Baffour Asuandzie’s 35th minute match winner.

Early in the second half, Kotoko blew away a chance to earn a vital point in WA after Abeiku Ainooson’s penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Richard Ofori to leave the Porcupine Warriors -- handled last Sunday by caretaker coaches Frimpong Manso and Godwin Ablordey -- in fourth position on 19 points but without a win in their last five matches.

Elmina Sharks earned a point in the nation’s capital after holding third-placed Hearts of Oak 1-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Joseph Mensah gave Sharks the lead in the 59th minute but Hearts fought back strongly and scored the equalising goal four minutes later through a well-taken free kick by Winful Cobbinah.

Nicholas Gyan continued his fine scoring form for Ebusua Dwarfs as he scored to earn them a lone goal victory over Berekum Chelsea at the Cape Coast Stadium to lift Dwarfs to the eighth position on the log. The goal took Gyan’s tally to eight and kept him on top of the top scorers’ chart, two more than his nearest challenger, Stephen Sarfo of Chelsea.

Former Ashgold star Charles Akonnor started his new job as coach of the Obuasi side on a losing note after his team went down 0-1 to Inter Allies at the El Wak Park with Prince Baffoe the lone-goal hero.

There was no winner at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman where Accra Great Olympics played a scoreless draw with Liberty Professionals, while Medeama SC defeated Bechem United 2-0 at Tarkwa through goals by Paul Aidoo and Amos Korankyi.
