‘Top 6 to prepare Bechem’

The chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo, says his outfit decided on a Top Six to prepare Bechem United adequately for their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Fianoo, who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of Ashantigold SC, noted that it was fair to give Bechem United the chance to partake in the competition since the basis for organising it was to prepare teams to participate well in Africa.

GHALCA decided to opt in favour of a Top Six competition instead of the known Top Four which normally precedes the new season after Bechem United finished seventh on the Premier League but qualified to participate in Africa after winning the MTN FA Cup.

Fianoo, who campaigned to restore the most glamorous Top Four competition in the build-up to being elected into office, said circumstances beyond his control allowed him to go against his preferred policy.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Fianoo said "Our decision to opt for a Top Six competition was to prepare Bechem United for their CAF Confederation Cup campaign".

"As you know, the competition was to prepare the then top four clubs in the Premier League at its completion for Africa so we intended to give Bechem United the same chance once they will be participating on the continent," he added.

Talking about sponsorship, Fianoo revealed that GHALCA would sign the TV Rights deal tomorrow and officially announce a title sponsor by Tuesday.

This year's Top Six will commence on November 6 and end on December 4, with Accra, Kumasi and Sunyani as venues for the matches.
