MTN FA Cup - Kotoko qualify for semis

Kumasi Asante Kotoko had to wait till the 93rd minute to book their place in the semi-finals of the MTN FA Cup when they beat Division One side Nea Salamina FC 2-1 yesterday in their outstanding quarter final match played at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Kotoko’s captain Amos Frimpong scored the much-awaited winning goal from the penalty spot after a frustrating first half during which the visitors came back strongly to draw level in the 34th minutes through Kwadwo Obeng Jnr, after Kotoko’s Saddick Adams had put the Porcupine Warriors ahead in the 11th minute.

Nea Salamina, which played with a well organised defence, had kept the Kotoko attack at bay for most part of the game and frustrated the homesters

Kotoko came back strongly after recess and mounted pressure on their opponents but try as they did, their attackers were held in check by the Nea Salamina defence until Wa-based referee Yakubu Nuru Liman whistled for a spot kick in the 93rd minute when a Kotoko attacker was fouled in the visitors goal area.  It was a decision that initially looked like a fair challenge on the Kotoko player but the boos and jeers from the crowd showed the fans disapproval of the decision.
