Lyon give up on Adebayor

Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor is still without a club after Lyon turned down the opportunity to sign the striker.

The former Tottenham and Arsenal man arrived in France expecting to pen a deal with the Champions League club.

But according to Sky Sports the club pulled out of a deal because Adebayor wanted to play in the African Cup of Nations in January.

It would mean Adebayor would have to miss at least one month of the season.

In a statement posted on Lyon’s club website, it read: “After the injury to Alexandre Lacazette, the club looked into the arrival of at least one new striker.

“The arrival of the young prospect Jean-Philippe Mateta fits perfectly with this strategy while the Togo international, who would not be eligible for the first stage of the Champions League, confirmed he wishes to play in the African Nations Cup in early 2017 which would mean an absence of a month or two.”

Adebayor later posted a cryptic Instagram post with a picture of him training.

The caption said: “Better things come to those who are patient and best things come to those who don’t give up.”

Adebayor spent the second half of last season at Crystal Palace following his release from Spurs but managed just one goal in an unsuccessful stint at Selhurst Park.

He was linked with a surprise move to Fulham this summer but a deal failed to materialise.
