Injuries have weakened Hearts’ defence - Thomas Abbey

Accra Hearts of Oak stand-in captain, Thomas Abbey, has blamed the club's inconsistency in the Premier League on injuries to central defenders, Robin Gnagne and Inusah Musah.

Hearts failed to continue their winning streak against Elmina Sharks in Accra last Sunday after the visitors held them to a 1-1 stalemate at their own backyard.

The Phobians’ backline has been left limping with skipper Gnagne and Inusah all out through injuries after conceding a lot of goals.

Abbey, who has inspired the club to a third place in 12 matches, told the Graphic Sports that the team missed the defensive pair in some of their games.

He, however, praised Vincent Atinga and Richard Akrofi for filling the void left by Abbey and Gnagne during their spells on the sidelines and scoring in the process for the team.  Atinga scored Hearts’ controversial winning goal in the 1-0 win over Asante Kotoko in Accra, while Akrofi scored in their 4-2 home win against Bechem United.

"These are great players for them team and we do miss them in our matches sometimes," Abbey said.

"Their absence have really affected us but I believe we have an equally good replacement in Atinga and Akrofi as they are doing a good job." added.

Talking about the team's chances of winning the top flight this season, Abbey noted that the Phobians’ focus would be to fight till the end of the campaign in search for the ultimate glory.
