Hearts tame WAFA

Accra Hearts of Oak withstood a late charge from visiting West Africa Football Union (WAFA) to ensure a 2-1 triumph in their delayed 14th week Ghana Premier League top liner at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday.

With that important home win, the Rainbow club thus moved to third place on the log with 23 points.

A 63rd minute curling free kick from resourceful winger, Winful Cobbina, which created a howler out of over-confident goalkeeper Razak Abalora and a clever float which saw Thomas Abbey heading straight into the net in the second minute   sealed victory for the Phobians.

Wounded WAFA pulled a goal back in the 88th minute after midfielder Abukari Ibrahim headed home from an acute angle following a corner-kick.

It was the three substitutions made by both teams which nearly cost the homesters in the dying minutes of the game.

Nonetheless, the Phobians took some respite in the last minute injury of goalie Sam Akurugu which delayed proceedings to the detriment of the rampaging WAFA till referee Prince Amoah’s final whistle.

WAFA, determined to maintain their lead, started attacking right from the onset but Hearts quickly returned the favour with that early goal by skipper Abbey.

That strike unsettled WAFA as the Phobians took control of the game and  attacked from the flanks in a bid to increase the tally.

Hearts nearly doubled the lead in the 40th minute but winger Patrick Razak, after dribbling his marker in the box, shot straight into the hands of Abalora.

Back from recess, Cobbina dummied two opponents and set up Kwame Kizito who blasted the ball over the bar from a good position.

WAFA, however, returned into the fray with some beautiful combinations between strikers Aminu Musah and Justice Amate Aaron but their efforts were thwarted by the Hearts defence.

Substitutes Richmond Lamptey and Richard Danso joined the fray to boost the WAFA attack but defenders Vincent Atinga and Richard Akrofi were up to the task.

WAFA introduced Emmanuel Boateng almost immediately to complement the efforts of Danso and Lamptey but still failed to break the resolute Hearts defence.

The visitors took control of the game and dominated proceedings in the dying minutes, leaving Hearts to gasp for breath.

In one of their forays, the academy boys got a corner kick from which Caleb Amankwah sent a high lob into the box which Ibrahim headed home.
