Former board member donates to Kotoko, widow

A former board member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Mr Kofi Boakye-Yiadom, made two separate donations to the club and the widow of the late Deputy Equipment Manager of the club, Mr Thomas Asare, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) yesterday.

Mr Boakye-Yiadom, fondly called Ricky, in the company of an avid fan of the club, Nana Acheampong, doled out a cheque for GH¢5,000 to the club and GH¢1,000 to the widow to defray the medical bills of the club, as well as give a head start to the woman.

Mr Asare died in a motor accident last week Wednesday when the team’s bus ran into a stationary vehicle at Nkawkaw on their return from Accra after honouring a midweek clash against Inter Allies.

With the exception of Coach Steve Polack, who is still on admission at KATH, all the injured players have been discharged.

Mr Boakye-Yiadom, a distributor of Guinness products in the Ashanti Region, said he might no longer be in charge of Kotoko but still had an obligation to champion the welfare of the club, at least to honour the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who gave him the opportunity to serve the club.

He expressed optimism that the club would bounce back to take its rightful place in Ghana football.

Meanwhile, players who were not part of the contingent which was involved in the accident resumed training yesterday while the recovered players would join them by the end of the month.

Coach Polack, flanked by players Baba Mahama and Collins Ameyaw at his bedside, praised Ghanaians for their show of love and sympathy.

He particularly appreciated the former board member, saying his gesture was rare because most people would never think of the club again the moment they leave office.
