Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has made a shock move for Germany defender Jerome Boateng.

Conte has turned to the Bayern Munich centre half in a bid to strengthen his squad as Chelsea look to carry on their spending.

Chelsea have made an enquiry to Bayern to check on Boateng’s availability and it is believed the World Cup winner could be open to a move back to the Premier League.

Boateng, 28, had a year at Manchester City but joined Bayern in 2011 and has enjoyed a huge successful period in Munich.

But injuries have often curtailed his progress and that may mean Bayern could be open to selling even though they would want in excess of £30m.

Conte is desperate to strengthen his defence and Boateng would be seen as a top class signing with John Terry leaving on a free and Nathan Ake set to join Bournemouth for £20m.

Chelsea are already set to splash £95m on Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Juventus wing back Alex Sandro.

But they are desperate to strengthen the defence but have drawn a blank so far as Southampton are refusing to sell on Virgil Van Dijk while Juventus are desperate to keep Leonardo Bonucci.

They have even checked on Roma defender Kostas Manolas who has stalled on a move to Zenit St Petersburg.

But Boateng appears to have jumped to the front of the queue as Chelsea carry on rebuilding.

They are also desperate to buy up front with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku their No1 striker target but they have been told he will cost £100m.
