Big guns stroll through Sanford Women’s FA Cup

So far, the Sanford Women’s FA Cup has been spared any major upset. At least, up to the Round of 16 matches which were honoured over the weekend, all the big teams in the National Women’s League (NWL) made it to the quarter-finals.

Defending champions, Police Ladies kept their unbeaten record in the competition intact when they beat Holy Royals 3-0, while Ampem Darkoa also beat Lepo Ladies 2-0 to keep their respective dream of a title defence and a double this season, on course.

And a victorious Police Ladies coach, Inspector Chris Darkey told the Graphic Sports that the result looked flattery but they had to fight to survive.

“Indeed, we set out to win the game at all cost, and Holy Royals proved tougher than we had imagined. It could have been a different story if we had taken them for granted.

“I’m happy the girls played to instructions and we are still in the competition to push for a title defence. Next, we have to plan for the quarter-finals. And it seems to be getting tougher as we advance,” Coach Darkey admitted.

Save the LadyStrikers versus Elmina Sea Lions’ encounter that ended 3-2 for the Elmina ladies, who interestingly lead on the NWL southern zone table, the results in the other games suggest easy matches, but the winners insist they all had to fight for the wins.

“It is never easy in such games as knockouts. Judging from the results, people might be convinced into thinking that it was easy, but it was never easy,” Coach Ernest Akotua of Prisons Ladies said of their 3-1 win against Northern Ladies.

In other games, Immigration Ladies were 2-0 winners over Samaria Ladies, while Faith Ladies were beaten 1-0 by visiting Army Ladies.

The match between Real Upper Ladies and Ashtown Ladies which was postponed, will be played at a later date.
