WBO behind cancellation of Dogboe-Kambassi fight?

The much-anticipated non-title fight between world title prospect Isaac Dogboe and Edward Kambasi may have been called off due to pressure on the organisers by the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) to protect the Ghanaian from a potentially risky encounter tomorrow on Azumah Nelson’s Fight Night, the Graphic Sports has learnt.

Dogboe, who is unbeaten in 16 fights, was expected to lock horns with his compatriot Kambasi in an eight-round super bantamweight bout as an undercard to the Wahab Oluwasuen-Abraham Osei Bonsu national  super featherweight title fight tomorrow.

Even though organisers of the bout have yet to disclose the reasons behind the cancellation of the bout set for the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel, information available to the Graphic Sports suggests that Dogboe's WBO International super bantamweight title was the reason for the cancellation of the bout as the world body refused sanction the fight to take place.

The fight was called off following the intervention by Paul Dogboe, father and trainer of the young boxer, who insisted that his ward would not honour the  advertised showdown.

Heta Mann, promoter of the Azumah Nelson Fight Night, told this paper that  he was disappointed and surprised at Dogboe’s team for pulling out but remained optimistic his absence from the bill would not affect the entire promotion.

He noted that Hemann Promotions’ collaboration of boxing icon Azumah Nelson was intended to help boxers in the country to get onto the international stage to challenge for a world title.

Legendary Azumah and main organiser of tomorrow’s event, denied an assertion that financial gains was the reason behind Dogoe’s withdrawal from the bout.

"He was being cautious because of his WBO title and it is understandable," he said.

He, however, appealed to Dogboe to work hard to realise his dream of becoming a world champion by taking every fight serious.
