Athletes chase Millennium Marathon prizes today

A host of experienced runners and athletes running for pleasure will compete today in this year’s Millennium Marathon which has a brand new Peugeot car and GH¢40,000 cash and other consolation prizes at stake.

The race, which begins from the Black Star Square, will see the athletes running over a distance of 21 kilometres and another special five-kilometre fun race for corporate organisations to create awareness of a healthy lifestyle.

Among a number of elite athletes in for the event is Colombia’s Yead Alexander and Andres Camilo, together with their coach, Jaier Bazzagner, who are counting on their experience in road race to cause an upset this time round.

Former national marathon champion, Millicent Boadi, who finished second in last year’s event with a personal best time of 1:29:59sec in the female event, and Kwabena Frimpong, who also finshed fourth in the men’s event last year, lead the local marathoners competing for the attractive GH¢40,000 prize money for both male and female races.

The Millennium Marathon is an annual event which seeks to train and enter athletes into world marathon and long distance events.
