Prez swears in two NCCE deputies

Two new deputy commissioners of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) were Thursday sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama with a charge to the commission to work at fostering national unity among Ghanaians.

Expressing concern about the deep partisanship that had eaten deep into the Ghanaian society, the President said, “The NCCE has a role to play in fostering national cohesion especially in the run-up to the upcoming district level elections and also as the nation approached next year's general elections.”

The two new deputies, Madam Josephine Nkrumah, a lawyer, and Mr Samuel Asare Akuamoah, a staff of the commission succeeded two deputies who retired and passed away respectively.

Constitution

Making reference to  the 1992 Constitutional provision that established the NCCE, President Mahama said the commission was one of the pillars of the country’s democracy.

Since the coming into being of the commission, he said, it had worked assiduously to promote the democratic values.

Waning nationalism

Mr Mahama also touched on the waning nationalism and patriotism within the society and said already the Council of State had flagged the problems with the view to tackling them head on.

He expressed delight that the commission was working with the council to craft a national public education programme to help reverse the canker.

He congratulated the two commissioners and urged them to let their impact be felt in their new roles, promising that the government would continue to support the commission  to achieve its objective.
