A Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Mr Akilu Sayibu, has described as commendable, the plans by President Akufo-Addo to name the Tamale Sports Stadium in memory of the late former Vice-President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, who hailed from the Northern Region.

He said the gesture did not only portray the President as a man of his words, but also keep the memory of the late Aliu alive.

During the electioneering, President Akufo-Addo promised to name the Tamale Sports Stadium after the former Vice-President in commemoration of his hard work for the country.

According to the GEPA deputy CEO, the late Mahama was a sports enthusiast, a founder member of the Real Tamale United (RTU) and also supported upcoming sports personalities in the region in various ways until he passed away on November 16, 2012.

The late former Vice-President was also instrumental in the siting of the facility in Tamale.

Mr Sayibu posited that naming the stadium after him was one of the many things that could stand in his memory.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to name the Tamale Sports Stadium as the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium at a ceremony in Tamale on December 10, 2017.

“Many Ghanaians and people of northern extraction are particularly happy about this idea and hope it will inspire many from the north to strive to become like the late Vice-President who cherished discipline, truthfulness and honesty in all his endeavours,” Mr Sayibu stated.
