The Parliamentary Service of Ghana has described Mr P. V. Obeng, the late Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), as a unifier whose contribution to the democratic improvement of Ghana was immeasurable.

According to a statement signed and issued by the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, Mr Obeng was a voice of reason that most people would listen to.

“It is, therefore, not surprising that although he belonged to one political party, members of other parties and, indeed, Ghanaians of all political persuasions, have found it easy to discuss pertinent issues he raised without any inhibitions,” the statement said.

The statement said although Mr Obeng was not a member of the Fourth Republican Parliament, his contribution to the overall democratic development of Ghana “cannot be glossed over, having held high positions in Ghana’s political structure and government”.

“Mr P. V. Obeng was very instrumental in the establishment of the Fourth Republic. As a presidential advisor on government affairs, he did not only give sound advice but also had a hand in putting in the structure that led to the establishment of the Fourth Republic,” it said.

The statement, therefore, called on Ghanaians to join hands in celebrating the life of Mr Obeng, remembering to aspire to lead lives that would honour their country and families.
