Five other persons sustained various degrees of injury.

The incident occurred after the NDP had held a durbar for the party faithful at Akomadan Afrancho.

According to a statement signed by its General Secretary, Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, and issued by the party in Accra yesterday, the Constituency Chairman, Isaac Mensah, died at 11:30 p.m. last Monday when a Burkinabe cargo truck rammed into the rear of one of the vehicles in the flag bearer’s convoy.

It quoted eyewitnesses  as saying the truck hit the vehicle from the rear, causing it to somersault several times.

In the process, Mensah was critically injured, while others sustained minor injuries.

The statement said the chairman was rushed to a clinic for first aid and thereafter to the Nkenkansu Hospital to stop the bleeding, but he did not survive.

It said the Afrancho Police arrested the driver of the truck who had attempted to flee the scene.

Meanwhile, the NDP and its flag bearer temporarily suspended their activities nationwide yesterday in deference to the memory of the late Mensah

Nana Konadu will resume her campaign in the Central Region today.

Campaigns

The former First Lady, whose campaign was almost derailed by her disqualification by the Electoral Commission (EC), has had to criss-cross the country to make up for lost time.

Already she has been to Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains in the Eastern Region, the Volta Region and was in the Ashanti Region when the accident occurred.

In the Ashanti Region, she had a successful campaign, with her supporters turning up in communities to welcome her with banners, flags and songs.

On her arrival in the areas which she visited, supporters chanted: “Two sure, two direct!” “Nana da sen? Ey3 two!”, referring to her second position on the ballot paper.

She visited Mpobi in the Afigya Kwabre South Constituency; Mponua in the Tano area and Tano Odumase, a community close to Bibiani in the Western Region, and was on her way to Boamang in the Afigya Kwabre North Constituency from Afrancho when Mensah’s death occurred.
