Offei Asiedu refutes allegations

The independent parliamentary candidate for Akropong, Mr Offei Asiedu, has debunked allegations that he used resources of the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly (ANMA) to provide social amenities in the area to enhance his chances of winning the seat in the November elections.

The ANMA is composed of two constituencies, Akropong and Okere, both of which are currently occupied by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Asiedu, 58, a businessman, who is currently the Presiding Member (PM) of the assembly,  has so far single-handedly provided 49 social amenities such as markets, water and sanitation facilities and feeder roads in most of the communities within the Akropong Constituency, especially the deprived ones.

Other social amenities

The aspiring MP is also at the moment constructing 21 other social amenities which he hopes to complete before November this year.

The fast rate at which the projects are being completed was fuelling speculations that Mr Asiedu is using his position as Presiding Member of the assembly to channel the assembly’s financial and material resources to fund the projects to win the confidence of the electorate.

Allegations and speculations

But in an interview with the Daily Graphic, the independent parliamentary aspirant said the allegations and speculations were totally baseless, since per the rules of the assembly, the PM could not use the assembly’s resources to provide such numerous amenities.

He, therefore, challenged any person in the area, especially supporters of the other aspiring parliamentarians for Akropong, to prove the allegations.

“I am a businessman, born and bred at Akropong and I have decided to give what I have to society, especially those in deprived communities, because past governments could not provide most of these amenities.

“The ANMA is made up of two constituencies; Akropong, which is represented in Parliament by W.O.Boafo, and Okere, with Dan Botwe as its MP, who will never sit by if I use the assembly’s resources to put up these amenities to enhance my chances of winning the Akropong seat,” he stated.

Mr Asiedu Offei, who was not perturbed about such allegations, since every prospective MP was bound to face such a challenge, assured the people of the constituency that he would continue to provide more amenities which would be handed over to them as soon as possible.
