NPP group storms MMT terminal at Abrepo

A group of suspected New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters on Thursday morning thronged the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) transport terminal at Abrepo in Kumasi to register their displeasure with the appointment of their new depot director.

The group, which was believed to be supporters of Daniel Agyei Boateng, whose appointment was revoked less than two weeks after taking office, demanded that their member be reinstated.

Mr Boateng took office on July 15, 2017 but his appointment was terminated and one Nicholas Oduro was appointed with his appointment taking effect from July 25, 2017.

The supporters of Mr Boateng went to prevent the newly appointed depot director from taking office.

Police intervention

The swift intervention of personnel of the Ghana Police Service prevented what could have degenerated into a chaotic situation.

The presence of the group at the terminal scared some of the passengers who had come to board buses to their various destinations.

This brought business at the terminal to a temporary halt and after the police had maintained some sanity, activities resumed albeit slow.

When the Daily Graphic team visited the terminal around 3pm, the police had dispersed the crowd and business was ongoing.

Transport Officer

The Transport Officer of the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) in Kumasi, Mr David Odei Lartey, confirmed the presence of the demonstrators in the morning, but said that could not interrupt their usual business in “moving the nation".

He assured the general public that business was ongoing, and called on the so-called supporters of the Mr Boateng to channel their grievances to the rightful quarters and seek redress.

TUC

In a related development, the General Transport, Petroleum & Chemical Workers’ Union of Ghana of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has written to the management of the MMT of the withdrawal of the services of its members due to the insecurity on the premises.

In a letter dated July 27, 2017 signed by its General Secretary, Mr Fuseini Iddrisu, the union said its attention had been drawn to the presence of police and party activists on the premises, making the working environment insecure for its members.

“We have, therefore, advised them to leave the insecure environment while the situation is brought to normalcy,” he said.

He said the union was, however, available for discussion to bring a closure to the issue.
