Nduom holds rallies at Jomoro, Tarkwa

The Presidential Candidate of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, last Friday and Saturday held three mammoth rallies at Jomoro, Tarkwa and Bogoso in the Western Region to begin his three-day campaign tour of the region dubbed, "The oil must benefit Western Region people first."

Hundreds of supporters of the party, particularly the youth, attended the rallies that brought activities at the three constituencies to a halt and caused massive vehicular traffic, especially at Tarkwa and Bogoso.

The three constituencies are among the list of PPP strongholds where the party is hopeful of winning the parliamentary seats as well as garner a lot of votes for Dr Nduom.

Currently, two of the three constituencies, where he toured, are in the grip of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with the remaining one being occupied by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC is occupying the Jomoro and Prestea Huni/Valley seats (Bogoso) while the NPP is holding on to the Tarkwa-Nsuaem seat.

However the PPP, being confident of taking these seats, has decided to field three young men who are very popular and respected by the people in those constituencies.

They are Mr Matthew Kwao Bentho, Mr Asiedu Seedof Simpey and Mr Edmund Duku for the Jomoro, Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Prestea Huni/Valley constituencies respectively.

PPP's vision for the region

Addressing the gathering at separate rallies in the three constituencies, Dr Nduom lamented how Ghana had not received any massive benefits of the oil, saying, "If the oil and gas will not benefit the ordinary Ghanaian, then it must stay in the ground."

He said under his presidency, the people of the Western Region would be the first beneficiaries of the oil revenue before the rest of the country.

Dr Nduom recounted how diamond had not improved the livelihood of the people of Akwatia and how gold had not benefited the Obuasi people, saying he would allow that to happen in the  Western Region.

'Today, you have oil and gas, but can you tell me any benefit that you have had from this natural resource?  What improvements has the oil brought to the region? It is only hardship I see here," he stated.

If elected, Dr Nduom said he would put in the right policies and framework that would ensure that the people of the Western Region benefited first before the rest of Ghana, else the oil would remain in the ground.

He also made his plans known for the establishment of a petrochemicals industry in the Western Region and the reconstruction of the towns and villages in Jomoro so that the people could benefit directly from the oil and gas.
