NDP confident of victory - Nana Konadu

The Founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has described President Mahama’s acceptance of the Ford Explorer vehicle gift from the Burkinabe businessman, Mr Oumarou Djibril Kanazoe, as wrong.

According to her, President Mahama ought to have been the first person to have said “no,” saying “anything in exchange for something is wrong.”

Speaking on Joy FM, Mrs Rawlings said if the gift had been given to Mr Mahama as an ordinary resident of his hometown, Bole, in the Northern Region by the contractor, and not as president, he (the President) would have been surprised.

The founder of the NDP said for the car gift to come from a businessman who wanted a government contract  was wrong and the President should not have accepted it.

Stopping short of adding her voice to calls for investigation into the President’s conduct, Mrs Rawlings said the fight against corruption was not being well executed.

For her, it was wrong to limit the issue of corruption to the President because corruption had become a serious governance issue.

The effect of the corrupt system, she said, had impacted adversely on the people of Ghana such that people now lacked the capacity to become economically viable and prosperous because of the canker of corruption.

“What is happening today smacks of somebody who is very careless with their lives,” she said.

Asked about a car gift that was given to her husband by one Mr Eddie Annan, when her husband was President, she said in that case it could not have been a bribe since her husband did not even know Mr Annan.

NDP victory

Meanwhile, the former First Lady has predicted victory for her party in the upcoming November polls.

Considering the kind of work the NDP is doing at the grass-roots level in the country, she said she was confident the party would form the next government of the day.

“You will have a miracle on your hands because I know it when we go out and I feel it,” she said in a confident tone.

The NDP was unable to compete in the 2012 polls because it failed to meet the deadline set by the Electoral Commission (EC) for parties to submit their nomination forms.
