NCCE places premium on study of Constitution

The Deputy Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in charge of Finance and Administration, Ms Kathy Addy, has called on Ghanaians, especially students to study the Constitution as part of their civic responsibilities.

“As Ghanaians aspiring to positions in future, it is important for you to be well versed in the country’s Constitution to enable you to live up to expectation,” she stated.

Ms Addy was speaking to a section of students from the Sunyani Technical University, the Catholic University College of Ghana, Fiapre and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who took part in the middle zone quiz competition organised by the NCCE in Sunyani.

The country has been zoned into three for the competition to test the knowledge of students from various tertiary institutions on the 1992 Constitution as part of the 60th independence anniversary celebration of Ghana.

Some of the areas in the Constitution covered during the competition included the Council of State, citizenship, territories of Ghana, human rights and the representation of the people.

Revival of civic clubs

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after the competition, Ms Addy said the commission had stepped up education to encourage Ghanaians to read the Constitution.

She explained that while civic clubs in the various second cycle schools were being revived, the commission had also targeted people within the informal sector for its educational programme on the Constitution.

“Our various social media platforms are also very active and we are interacting with many people on the Constitution.

“The Constitution should be part of the everyday lives of the people. There is the need for them to be abreast of their duties and responsibilities,” she stated.

Ms Addy noted that even though the NCCE had been organising quizzes based on the Constitution among second cycle institutions, it now considered it prudent to test the knowledge of tertiary students on the various provisions in the document.

She, therefore, encouraged the students to adopt the culture of reading to enable them to be abreast of things happening around them.

Competition

At the end of the competition, representatives of the KNUST came first with 184 points while the Catholic University College placed second with 108 points, with the Sunyani Technical University placing third with negative 129 points.

Ms Addy commended the participants for demonstrating their understanding of the various topics treated during the competition.

She announced that the winners of the competition in the three zones would compete later to determine the overall winner.
