MP for Wassa East donates to 340 displaced farmers

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Wassa East Constituency in the Western Region, Mr Isaac Adjei-Mensah, has presented relief items worth more than GH¢40,000 to 340 displaced farmers.

The items presented by the MP included, mattresses, rice, cooking oil, mosquito nets, and rubber buckets.

A couple of weeks ago, a heavy downpour in the region caused the Pra River to overflow its banks which displaced some settler farmers in about 115 households and submerged their cocoa, cassava, maize, crops and vegetable farms.

The farmers are from three communities namely, Prato Number One, Prato Number Two and Kokooase in the Wassa East District in the Western Region.

Currently, the victims and their families, mostly from the Volta Region, who carry out their activities along the river banks are lodging in the local basic school blocks which are also in dilapidated conditions.

40 years history

Making the presentation to the victims in their respective settlements last Sunday, Mr Adjei-Mensah noted that the three communities were the food basket of the district in particular and the region as a whole and also contributed significantly to the economy of the country in terms of cash crop cultivation.

The MP was accompanied by the Presiding Member of the Wassa East District Assembly, Mr Stephen Angu, the District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Felix A. K. Ntibrey, as well as some executive members of the constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while the Assembly Member for the area, Mr Daniel Kervor, was in-charge of the distribution.

Mr Adjei-Mensah recalled that about 40 years ago, the people suffered a similar fate and suggested that they were resettled in a safer location so that they could continue with their farming activities to the benefit of the country.

"As your MP, and considering how you showed political love and affection for me during the last election, I cannot but come to console you with this token as a reciprocal gesture in your distressed situation," he said.

The MP, however, urged them not to be perturbed but rather be strengthened by what had occurred and even put in more effort to produce more for themselves and the country.

He further declared that: "We won't let you down but will continue to mobilise resources to support you in your endeavours. Don't be down-hearted but rather be strong and have faith and solace in the Almighty God as He is the giver and taker."

Medical and extension services

Mr Adjei-Mensah advised them to be wary of snakes, scorpions and other reptiles which could harm them in their new environment.
