Kupualor gets nod for Yilo Krobo MCE

The President’s nominee for the Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position, Mr Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor, has finally been confirmed at an emergency assembly meeting held at Somanya.

Two weeks ago the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, re-nominated Mr Kupualor for the position as the MCE after the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly failed to endorse him on two different occasions.

The nominee polled 40 votes out of 60 votes cast, representing 66.6 per cent. There was one spoilt ballot.

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly Hall which was tensed prior to the voting became calm when the result was declared last Monday, with supporters of Mr Kupualor jubilating outside the assembly premises and pouring powder on one another.

It took the intervention of national security to protect the ballot box and Electoral Commission officers from any attack, while Somanya police personnel positioned themselves at the entrance of the hall as rumours went round that some ‘macho’ men and vigilante groups were planning to snatch the ballot box after the voting exercise.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Electoral Officer, Mr Gabriel Dei, declared Mr Kupualor the MCE for the area after a successful count of ballots.

Aggrieved assembly members

Some aggrieved assembly members who were not happy about what was happening left the hall before the results were declared.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Eric Darfour, who administered the oaths of allegiance, office and secrecy admonished the MCE not to be complacent and lord over the assembly members, chiefs and the entire Yilo Krobo community, adding that: “The assembly members are your backbone and when you work with them closely, you shall succeed.”

He said looking at how young Mr Kupualor is, the President had confidence in him and that was why he was re-nominated; therefore, there was the need to do what was right in order to promote the agenda of his government and also move the development of Yilo Krobo forward.

“Mr Kupualor, through the President, your people have put you in a position of trust. It is not about being learned. Serve them with humility and compassion and do not lord over them,” the regional minister stressed.

Mr Darfour emphasised that the President abhorred corruption and urged him to utilise the Common Fund, as well as internally generated funds in the municipality to develop the area, adding: “The President is passionate about Yilo Krobo.”

It will be recalled that Mr Kupualor was rejected on two different occasions when the assembly members met for the confirmation.

He polled less than the two-thirds majority at both meetings, with some youth of the area holding the assembly members hostage as they were allegedly accused of taking GH¢3,000.00 each.
