Haruna Iddrisu spearheads reconciliation efforts

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, is spearheading efforts to reconcile members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region to enable the party to achieve its agenda of reclaiming seats it lost in the 2012 election.

In this direction, Mr Iddrisu, who is also the political and strategic leader of the Northern Regional NDC Campaign Team, has initiated moves to unite the various factions that emerged after the party’s parliamentary primary.

Aggrieved members

Some members of the party who lost the primaries became aggrieved and threatened to contest in those constituencies as independent candidates.

However, Mr Iddrisu’s reconciliatory moves to convince aggrieved members of the party to reconsider their decision have yielded positive results as some of them have backed down and rather decided to throw their support behind the NDC candidates in the affected constituencies.

Some of the aggrieved members who lost during the parliamentary primaries included Daniel Nsala Wakpal for Kpandai Constituency, Tampi Acheampong Simon and Thomas Borepong Laten for the Sanguli Constituency and Alhassan Iddrisu Bunglung for the Savelugu Constituency.

They have all waived their ambitions in support of the NDC candidates to brighten the party’s chances of winning all the lost seats in the 2012 election in the region.

They said they came to the decision because they had been convinced by Mr Iddrisu that their earlier decision to go independent could jeopardise the party’s agenda.

Meanwhile, efforts to convince candidates in Savelugu and Tamale North  constituencies where renowned broadcast journalist, Alhassan Suhuyini, is contesting seem to have hit a deadlock.

A close source to the minister, however, revealed that negotiations were still ongoing to boost the NDC’s chances.

Haruna Iddrisu is among the 15-member Northern Regional Campaign Taskforce headed by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru-Limuna.
