Hanna Tetteh before Parliament over Gitmo detainees

The minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Hanna Tetteh, has admitted that there is an agreement between the United States of America and Ghana on the acceptance of the two ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees, Mahmoud Omar bin Atef and Khalid Salih Muhammad Al-Dhuby, into the country.

Addressing Members of Parliament (MPs) behind closed doors last Friday, Ms Tetteh said she was not to give the reason why Ghana accepted them, sources which sat in the meeting said.

One of the sources said the Foreign Minister also failed to state the type of travelling documents the ex-detainees used to enter the country, the type of visa granted them and who was bearing the cost of their upkeep.

"Although there is war in Yemen, some Yemeni citizens freed from Guantanamo were returned to their country. So on what basis were they brought to Ghana," the source  asked.

The source noted that the issue was being openly discussed in the United States and wondered why the minister had decided to discuss the matter with MPs behind closed doors.

Minority displeased

The source, who is a member of the Minority, said he was displeased with the turn of events.

He said the Minster had never spoken about the Rwandans, the Syrians who are already in town and the Yemenis who happen to be here with fake passports and fake visas.

“Neither did she speak about the missing person who was bound for Abidjan but got lost at the Kotoka Airport which are all security threats to the nation," the source added.

Asked if there would not be consequences if it was found that the information at the closed door meeting was leaked by him, the source said: "Am I dumb? I have not been sworn in not to speak."

"The people in my constituency are worried . This weekend I will meet a section of them and I will tell them that this is a government they should distrust," the source said.
