EC staff must remain neutral — Charlotte Osei

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, has advised staff members of the commission to exercise neutrality, civility and patriotism in all that they do before and during the election.

She said all the country required of them was for them to do their work to the best of their ability and adhere to the laws and processes governing the election.

The EC boss gave the advice at a day’s prayer and fasting programme organised by the EC and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Christian fellowship in collaboration with the Retired Staff Association of EC in Accra last Wednesday.

According to her, there would not be war in Ghana before, during or after the December polls.

She, therefore, assured Ghanaians of very peaceful, transparent, free and fair general election, promising to ensure that the peace and tranquillity being enjoyed by the citizens was intact.

“After all, we are all one family and all we are going to do is to elect the head and elders of the family. Why should we kill one another because we are electing a head of family? This is a very simple matter and we are complicating it,” she noted.

Measures

Mrs Osei said the commission had deployed 148,000 personnel on the ground, while 64,000 security personnel, over 400 international observers and more than 10,000 local observers would also be operating in their various capacities that day.

She added that all the 15.7 million people on the voters register had their preferred candidates, but only one person would become President, in addition to 274 Members of Parliament.

“So whether you like it or not, some of your preferred candidates will not win, and whether you like it or not, some of your preferred candidates will win. At the end of the day, what the majority of the people in the constituency and the country wherever they have fixed their thumb print the Electoral Commission will count. We will say what the majority has said and we will all continue with our lives.”

The EC boss also said the commission had committed the whole day into the hands of God to supervise the process. “He will supervise the people who are going to vote. He will supervise the candidates and that God will take total control of the election. At the collation, we totally believe that it will all end in praise, we will have reason to praise God at the end of the day,” she noted.

Word of exhortation

In a word of exhortation, an international evangelist, Rev. Dr Lawrence Tetteh, urged citizens to allow Ghana to become victorious after the polls.

He said God had already elected the person to govern the country for the next four years, hence Ghanaians should allow God to do His work.

He added that when it becomes critical, God would allow angels to vote on that day in order for His will to be fulfilled.

Rev. Dr Tetteh cited the elections of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Dr Busia, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, John A. Kufuor, Evans Attah Mills and President John Mahama as miraculous.

He advised the electorate to avoid insults or violence on the election day.
