Durbar for political parties

Durbar for political parties

The Local Council of Churches at Ekye Amanfrom in the Afram Plains South District in the Eastern Region has urged various political parties not to involve themselves in any activity that has the potential to undermine the peace in the country.

According to the council, Ghana would continue to be peaceful if only political parties preach peace instead of hatred and  insults.

The council made the call when members of the council, led by its chairman, Pastor Benson Akoni, marched through the principal streets of Ekye-Amanfrom amid brass band music and placards, some of which read, "Ghana must enjoy peace", "Let peace prevail",  "Mother Ghana needs peace, and "Welcome peace into this year’s election", among others.

Durbar

Addressing a durbar after the march, Pastor  Akoni said the purpose of organising the programme was to draw attention of the people in the area, especially the youth, on the need to maintain peace, before, during and after the election.

He also urged the media to be circumspect in their reportage so as not to heighten passions since that would not take the country anywhere.

"We know what has happened to other countries through electoral violence, let us not go that way as we are one another’s keeper,” he added.

Ghana for peace

Speaking on the theme, "Ghana for peace" the Chief of Ekye Amanfrom, Nana Osei Yaw, said without peace Ghana could not develop as expected.

He called on the youth not to allow politicians to use them to satisfy their parochial interest during the election.

The Afram Plains South District Chief Executive, Mr Ibrahim Issakar, commended the local council of churches for their vision and said the security agencies were capable of maintaining peace during and after the election.

He said the Regional Security Council (RESEG) and the District Security Council (ISEC) had put measures in place to protect the people in the region.

The Medical Superintendent of Ekye Amanfrom Hospital, Dr David Bawah, advised Ghanaians not to allow politics to divide them, rather  "Ghanaians must ensure that peace, which is a prerequisite for sustaining life and property, is maintained at all times".
