CPP beckons disgruntled members back to fold
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has initiated reconciliatory mechanisms to address the disunity among the party’s leadership in the past that had caused its electoral fortunes to dwindle.

The party has, therefore, called on disgruntled members who left the party to come back as the party gears up to garner support to enable it to win the 2016 polls.
This was made known by the National Chairman of the party, Prof. Edmund Delle, at an event held at the CPP headquarters in Accra on Monday to mark the 67th anniversary of its formation.
Present at the event were other national executive members and stalwarts of the party, who sang the party’s anthem and took the gathering through the history of the CPP.
Unite for victory
Prof. Delle said the Founder of the party, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was a proactive, visionary, selfless and inspirational leader and that it was important for the current generation to imbibe those virtues to develop the country.
He urged CPP members to forge a united front to get the support of the public in order to win the election and form a government that would revisit the policies the founding fathers stood for.
“The cock is crowing for the salvation of Ghana. We have been witnesses to weakening economic structures, policy deficiencies and lack of employment opportunities ever since the CPP left the political scene in a most unfortunate manner. The CPP ought to win power to return the country to its glorious moments,” he said.
Dialogue is key
Prof. Delle called on the public to support the Electoral Commission (EC) to deliver a peaceful and credible election.
He said dialogue among the political actors was critical to maintaining peace during the election, just as the EC also ought to ensure transparency in its operations.
Policy gap
For his part, the General Secretary of the party, Nii Armah Akomfra, recalled that the policies and programmes Dr Kwame Nkrumah rolled out after independence were targeted at building a resilient and self-reliant economy.
“So, you will see that other leaders of political parties are only trying to repackage those policies, but they are unable to do it perfectly,” he said.
Nii Armah said unlike some political parties, the CPP was formed on the foundation of the youth and the underprivileged and that it was the only party which could serve the interest of the masses.
He said the party had a pivotal space for the youth and, therefore, called on the younger generation to come back to the party that was formed for them.
Background
The CPP was formed in 1949 by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, after he broke away from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), a party he served in as a General Secretary.
Sharp ideological differences and other factors were cited for his departure from the UGCC to form the CPP.
After going through thick and thin, Dr Nkrumah led the CPP to gain independence for Ghana. He was at the helm of affairs until the CPP administration was toppled in a military coup in 1966.
