Churches must assist in voters register exhibition — Christian Council

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has appealed to churches to assist the Electoral Commission (EC) in any way they can to facilitate a smooth run of the voters register exhibition currently underway.

This, the council said, could be done by making available their premises, chairs, canopies as well as providing registration officials with drinking water.

The General Secretary of the council, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, made the call after a two-day tour of some registration centres in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

“For instance, local churches can provide seating for people waiting in queues to register, offer their halls or canopies to provide shade for registration officials and even provide them with water as their religious contribution to ensuring a smooth process,” he said.

Sharing his experience with the Daily Graphic, he said some centres were located in open places, thereby leaving the registration officers at the mercy of the weather.

He said: “Registration officials and the electorate have to endure the scorching sun or the rains, making the process very uncomfortable for them.”

Nightmarish

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the exhibition officer of Osu Cinema Hall One and Two, Ms Sharon Sackey, said the exercise was a nightmarish experience, since officials were forced to stop the exhibition whenever it rained or drizzled.

She added that they had no choice but to sit under the scorching sun.

Another exhibition officer at the station, Opoku Ogyiri Kujo, said it was agonising working under the scorching sun, adding that they had no chairs and other amenities that would ensure the smooth running of the programme.

He further called for the extension of the programme, since they had to send people home any time it threatened to rain.

For his part, an exhibition officer at Osu Apostolic Church, Delase Hlovor, said exhibition officials had to borrow chairs from people in the area.

He expressed the fear that the forthcoming general election would face serious challenges if the EC did not provide the necessary resources for the polls.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong also used the occasion to provide the exhibition centres with drinking water.
