Blows at election of KMA Presiding Member (Video)

There was some peripheral trading of blows when members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) met on Tuesday to elect a Presiding Member.

The assembly was meeting for the fifth time to elect a PM after four failed attempts.

The members have not been able to elect a PM as of now as a result of entrenched positions taken by the two contending parties and their supporters, Nana Kofi Senya, Assembly Member for Suame and Nana Baffour Agyei Kesse, the Adumhene who is a government appointee.

Graphic Online’s Kumasi correspondent, Daniel Kenu reported that when the members met at the Trades Union Congress Hall at the TUC suburb in Kumasi on Tuesday, there was a free for all fight between some elected members of the  Assembly and a known NDC constituency secretary as the assembly was still locked up on who becomes the next Presiding Member.

The Asawase constituency secretary of the NDC, Mr Yakubu Tony Aidoo, according to our reporter was said to have provoked some of the members when he described them as selfish and stalling development in Kumasi.

The members were said to have reacted swiftly with some hefty punches as Yakubu struggled to get out of the 'woods'.

It took the intervention of some loyal friends to save the outspoken NDC member from further beatings.

Incumbent Kofi Senya and Adumhene Nana Baffour Agyei Kesse have contested for the past four times but none has failed to secure the two third majority.

At Tuesday's meeting the Adumhene stepped down for Senya but members had to still vote 'YES' or 'NO' to either confirm him or not.

He will still need the two third of the votes which is 98 to be confirmed.

As of 2pm, the Ashanti Regional Minister who is doubling as the Kumasi Mayor, Mr Alexander Ackon and the members were still locked up in the meeting to get a new PM.
