Bawumia exposes NPP’s hatred for Voltarians - Koku Anyidoho

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Koku Anyidoho, has challenged the Vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to come up with concrete evidence to the claim he made that the voters register had names of unqualified registrants from the Republic of Togo.

He said now that the voters exhibition exercise was over, it had become clear that Dr Bawumia had made a false claim and it fell in line with the tradition of the United Party (UP), the main opposition party in the first republic, that the Volta Region was not part of Ghana.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this whole bad approach by Bawumia to create a false impression that thousands of Togolese vote in the Volta Region is deeply rooted in the UP tradition agenda against Voltarians and the Volta Region,” he stated.

“They insult us, they spit on us, they consider us to be Togolese and when we refuse to vote for them, they say we are inward looking,” he said.

He also asked “have we ever sat down to plot evil against the Ashanti Region because it is the stronghold of the NPP? Certainly not...it is now as clear as daylight that Dr Bawumia’s evil agenda of presenting a fake voters register from Togo and making a false claim that thousands of Togolese have their names on Ghana’s register (specifically from the Volta Region) feed into the UP tradition’s thinking that the Volta Region is not part of Ghana.”

Agenda against Volta Region

He said the attempt by Dr Bawumia to create the false impression that thousands of Togolese vote in the Volta Region was deeply rooted in the UP traditions’s agenda against Voltarians and the Volta Region.

“Where is the 90 per cent and more that Bawumia promised to produce from Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and other neighbouring countries?” he queried.

Addressing a press conference in Ho last Monday, Mr Anyidoho said it was because he was not able to make good his promise of producing the extra 90 per cent plus from other countries that made it convincing that Dr Bawumia and the NPP deliberately chose Togo in order to paint the Volta Region in a bad light.

He also said in lending weight to Dr Bawumia’s lies and fabrications, the NPP flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, had gone to Europe to claim that over one million foreigners were on the voters register and that the register had become an ECOWAS one and no longer a Ghanaian register and must be changed.

Mr Anyidoho said all those allegations had not been proved, saying all machinations were wicked attempts to court unnecessary dislike and hatred for Voltarians.

Togolese on the voters register

Mr Anyidoho said if it was true that Dr Bawumia had hard evidence to buttress his claim of Ghana having the names of 76, 268 Togolese on the register, he should have taken advantage of the just-ended voters register exhibition exercise to present his evidence to the EC for the said names to be deleted.

He also expressed regret on the way some civil society groups and individuals fell for the bait of Dr Bawumia and the NPP and started issuing all kinds of statements and communiques without interrogating the issues.
