UNDP supports three organisations to undertake water projects

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has offered a grant of $112,000 to three organisations to undertake water projects in rural and peri-urban communities in the country.

The project is expected to increase access to quality water production in the beneficiary communities.

Saha Global, TREND Group and Coalition of Non-Government Organisations in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) are the beneficiaries of the grant after emerging winners in a challenge prize competition on innovative solution to water challenges under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Philanthropy Platform.

Per its proposal, Saha Global seeks to expand access to clean water to the rural poor by utilising basic materials to treat contaminated water.

The TREND Group project is to promote the concept of water safety plan as a key strategy for improving water service delivery in the country.

CONIWAS will be reviewing and aligning national standards and guidelines, analyse existing boreholes in rural areas and also cost the mechanisation of all boreholes.

Accessibility

At a signing ceremony in Accra, the Country Director of the UNDP, Mr Dominic Sam, said more than eight million Ghanaians lacked access to quality water.

He said the challenge prize was, therefore, to find innovative ways of increasing access to quality water in the country.

Mr Sam indicated that the three projects had the potential to increase the supply of water and improve its quality in beneficiary communities.

Besides, the interventions would engage the public in the delivery of water to ensure ownership.

Response

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, affirmed the resolve of the government to increase access to quality water in the country.

He said the government had developed guidelines to improve quality water supply for which reason resources had been allocated for such projects.

Mr Ada said water projects were highly demanding and indicated the government was strategising how to raise enough funding for water projects.

He,however, entreated corporate bodies and philanthropists to extend some financial support towards the projects.
