Practitioners trained to support CHPS compounds

Health practitioners have been trained and sent to the various Community Based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) compounds in the 11 districts of the Upper West Region, to support the various healthcare institutions.

Made up of midwives, community health officers (CHOs), community health nurses and student health nurses, the practitioners are to help address the problem of morbidity and mortality among pregnant women and children in the region.

Currently, there are 198 CHPS compounds in the region. Out of the number, 64 were constructed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through the Japanese grant and handed over to the government.

During a tour of some of the CHPS compounds, the JICA Chief Advisor in the Upper West Region, Ms Satoko Ishiga, told the Daily Graphic that the training of the health officials formed part of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and JICA project dubbed "Project for scaling up of CHPS", to utilise the CHPS system as a vehicle to improve the access to quality maternal and neonatal care.

ANC’s coverage

ANC’s coverage in the region is 86 per cent, skilled delivery is 53 per cent and PNC coverage is 69 per cent.

The Assistant Regional Coordinator of the CHPS projects, Mr Musah Ali, said the training had built the capacity of midwives, community health nurses and officers in dealing with issues relating to maternal and neonatal care, stressing that although maternal deaths in the region had reduced, neonatal death was still high, with more interventions being put in place to address issues that affected women and children.

A representative of the Public Relations Office of the Embassy of Japan, Mr Stanislaus Acquah, said the purpose of the tour in the Upper West Region was to assess the impact of the JICA project which began in September, 2011 and would end in September this year.
