One more student dies of Meningitis in Upper East region

One of the students of the Tempane Senior High School who was in critical condition at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital in the Upper East Region died of Meningitis Saturday morning.

This brings the total number of students who have died from the disease to two in the region.

Last week a student of the Bawku Senior High Technical School died of the disease.

The Medical Director of the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, Dr.Clement Oppong who made this known to Graphic Online indicated that six out of nine students who were still on admission have been discharged while the remaining three were still being monitored although they were in a stable condition.

According to him, the six students discharged were treated for various illnesses including Malaria but not Meningitis.

Dr. Oppong further explained that the three students still on admission might be discharged from the hospital Monday, adding that "we do not expect any more deaths to occur as we are encouraging students to report any symptom of the disease early".

EDUCATION
The director equally pointed out that the Municipal Health Directorate had intensified its education on the disease. He stated that the various communities were also being educated on the disease.

MENINGITIS
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The swelling from meningitis typically triggers symptoms such as headache, fever and a stiff neck.

Cases of Meningitis have been recorded in some senior high schools in other parts of the country while a number of students have also died from Influenza Type A at the Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Region.

Influenza, commonly known as "the flu", is an infectious disease caused by the influenza virus. The most common symptoms include: a high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, and tiredness.
