The participating clubs included the Sekondi Keep fit Club, Twin City Keep Fit Club, GHAPOHA Keep Fit Club, Stadium Keep Fit Club, Essipon, Bethel Methodist Keep Fit Club and Takoradi Keep Fit Club which organised the event as part of programmes lined up for its 30th anniversary celebration.

After the walk, which lasted over three hours, participatns converged on the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) Park, where they undertook some aerobics.

Among the dignitaries graced the occasion were the Deputy Western Regional Minister, Mr Alfred Ekow Gyan, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Takoradi, Kobby Okyere-Mensah, as well as past executive members of the respective clubs.

Mr Gyan told the Graphic Sports in an interview that physical exercises were very good for the citizenry, especially the working class since their inability to perform their daily institutional duties would affect the economy.

He was particularly happy that the executives of the Takoradi Keep fit Club had decided to organise the walk as part of activities to mark their 30 years of existence, adding that 30 years in the life of an organisation was worth to celebrating as some associations were formed and died off in few years’ time

‘‘If the population at large is healthy productivity will go high and the economy will progress. Ghana is also the only country we have and so there is no need for us to fight among ourselves because of elections but rather protect the existing peace in the country, the deputy regional minister maintained.”

The MP for Takoradi reminded everyone, especially members of the various political parties not to be oblivious of the repercussions of their utterances on the airwaves as the country prepared for the December polls, saying that when there was war everyone would suffer the consequences.

The Chairman of the Takoradi club, Mr Richard Nii Aggrey, explained that the peace walk was simply to draw the attention of the general public on the approach of the December elections and the need to maintain the prevailing peace throughout the election process.

the Ankobeahene of Denkyira, Nana Ntobonkyi III appealed to Nananom that for the sake of peace in the country they should not be seen to be partisan and openly show their biases; rather they should refrain from making speeches that could tear the nation apart.
