The Kaneshie Polyclinic has begun offering blood transfusion services to patients as it takes steps to improve healthcare delivery to residents in and around the Okai Koi sub-area in Accra.

According to the Medical Director of the polyclinic, Dr Patrick Amo-Mensah, the polyclinic staff manning the blood transfusion facility have been properly trained.

Accreditation

Moreover, he said, the facility had been accredited by the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) to render blood transfusion services.

The establishment of the transfusion facility, he said, was in line with an initiative designed by the Regional Director of Health Service, Dr Linda Van Otoo, called the “PROMISE; Promote Maternal Infant Survival Excellence.”

Out of the 12 drivers of the initiative, programme six focuses on prompt referrals, ambulance services and blood transfusion services.

The polyclinic, which is Ghana’s oldest polyclinic, was constructed in 1966 and currently runs a 24-hour service, receiving more than 400 patients daily.

Pregnancy

In the past, Dr Amo-Mensah said, anytime there was any issue regarding a pregnant woman “who has lost so much blood we had to get the woman into a taxi or ambulance and then rush the person to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital or the 37 Military Hospital”.

He said now, no woman would have to leave the facility to access blood transfusion services if the person had given birth but lost so much blood for which the person needed blood.

He also said some children who came to the facility were so anaemic due to severe malaria or any other condition that had made them lose so much blood for which they needed blood transfusion.
