GCGL, Adabraka Presby YAF to organise health screening

The Young Adults’ Fellowship (YAF) of the Adabraka Presbyterian Church, in partnership with the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), will organise a health screening and blood donation exercise on Saturday, February 25, at Adabraka, Accra as part of the fellowship’s 10th anniversary celebration.

The YAF anniversary committee chairperson, Mr Frank Anane-Frempong, said the theme for the celebration was: “Impacting in Our Generation,” hence the decision by the fellowship to provide free medical screening for people in their community.

Restocking blood banks
“We need strong and healthy people in the country to help with sustained development, so if we provide free health screening and donate blood to restock the blood banks, I think that will be most useful,” he explained.

Mr Anane-Frempong said they were expecting about 300 people to turn up for the screening and also mobilise about 100 pints of blood to the various blood banks.

He said YAF was partnering GCGL because it was a big media house, adding that Graphic was part of Adabraka.

“Getting sponsorship and funds is not easy but we are still hoping to get more people on board to make everything a success,” he said.

GCGL CSR
The Chairperson of the blood donation committee of GCGL, Dr Jacqui Barnes, said helping to restock the National Blood Bank, as well as screening communities for diseases was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).

She said GCGL had been organising blood donation exercises annually for two years and would be collaborating with other institutions this year for three blood donation programmes.

She mentioned that partnering the Adabraka Presbyterian YAF as they also celebrated their anniversary was the first of such collaborations this year.

Dr Barnes also explained the health benefits of blood to the body, saying it maintained the irons in the body at healthy levels, which is linked with low cancer risk.

“Blood donation is important in reducing the risk of heart and liver ailments caused by iron overload in the body,” she added.

Background
Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) had its maiden blood donation exercise in September 2015 as part of its CSR.
