‘Addiction to sugary substances unhealthy’

A health professional has described as dangerous the excessive intake of foods with higher levels of cholesterol.

A Weighting List Practice Trainer at the Chiropractic and Wellness Centre (CWC), Mrs Mavis Manns, told the Daily Graphic that one of the major issues that continued to affect the health of many Ghanaians, especially the youth, “is their addiction to sugary substances such as coke and fatty foods.

”She was speaking in an interview in Accra on a special cooking master class the centre organised for mothers.

Mrs Manns stressed the need for Ghanaians to desist from taking in ‘junk foods’ which she explained as foods that contained high levels of calories from sugar or fat with little fibre, protein, vitamins or minerals.

Junk foods

According to Mrs Manns, the frequent intake of junk foods was inimical to the health and lifespan of people.

“Unfortunately, a lot of households have resorted to eating junk food which is less nutritious instead of eating home-made meals.

"I entreat you to cultivate the habit of making dishes that can be stored in refrigerators so that children will always have something to snack on," she advised.

Cooking class

The cooking class was part of the centre's monthly day celebrations towards orienting Ghanaians on how to stay healthy in order to live long.

The programme was on the theme, “Nutrition and health security in our households."

Mrs Manns also encouraged parents to provide their dependents with fresh natural juices rather than sodas and other kinds of fizzy drinks that caused health problems.

The Operations Manager of CWC, Mr Philip Reimmer, reiterated the need for constant chiropractic checks to improve on body ligaments.
