The exercise, which was supported by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Regional Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit, was in line with sustaining the campaign on cleanliness and proper disposal of liquid and material waste.

Target areas

The facilities sprayed included public toilets and institutional places of convenience in schools, health centres, refuse dumping sites and market centres.

The Regional Vector Control Officer of Zoomlion, Mr Ezekiel Ayamga, told the Daily Graphic after the exercise that apart from the spraying exercise, Zoomlion and its partners also sensitised the people to the effects of open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of waste.

“With the onset of rains, the possibility of an outbreak of diseases is very high and so it is important that we avoid complacency,” he said, and advised residents to be conscious of the sanitation and hygiene situation in their respective communities.

Commendation

An Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer, Mr Henry Bagah, commended the company for its proactive measure and said it would go a long way to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

He attributed the absence of cholera cases in the region to the regular disinfections carried out by Zoomlion and other stakeholders.

A representative from the GHS, Mr John Maakpe, also advised the people to adapt best sanitation habits such as washing their hands regularly with soap, avoiding open defecation and heating their food before eating.
