Barely 24 hours after the inaugural ceremony of President Akufo-Addo at the Black Star Square in Accra, the arena and its environs look clean.

At about 3 p.m. on Sunday when the Daily Graphic got to the arena, workers of Zoomlion Ghana Limited were busily cleaning and collecting waste generated by the public during the investiture.

The thousands of people who thronged the area to witness the event littered the entire ceremonial ground, including the Ministries, the environs of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, the Volta River Authority (VRA) building, the John Evans Atta Mills High Street and many roads leading to Osu.

Empty water sachets, plastic water bottles, takeaway packs, black polythene bags and yoghurt wrappers were scattered almost everywhere, including the drains around.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Communication Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Robert Coleman, said the company deployed over 1,000 staff in the metropolis to clean up the venue.

 Rubbish collected

Mr Coleman said because of the quantity of the garbage created, the staff had to sweep from the National Theatre through to the Independence Square to the Osu Castle.

He said a lot of rubbish was collected from the Black Star square and its environs.

The company also cleaned the FlagStaff house to ensure that the environment was conducive for work to commence at the seat of government yesterday.

Mr Coleman said similar services would be repeated during the Independence Day celebrations on March 6, 2017 and every national event.

Zoomlion commended

In an interview with a section of the public, they commended the waste management company for tidying up the city.

A nurse at the Ridge Hospital, Ms Adjoa Asare, noted that although bins were placed at vantage points, the public still littered the area with filth, leaving the place in a total mess.

Ahead of the inaugural ceremony, some personnel of the Zoomlion Ghana Limited cleaned and beautified the ceremonial streets of Accra.

The company painted pavements and pedestrian walkways and decorated traffic lights and trees along the streets in the national colours.

They also weeded road medians (road islands), swept the streets and cleared drains in Accra and Tema.
