ZONTA Club refurbishes Korle Bu Mothers' Hostel

The  Zonta Club of Accra, an organisation of professionals and business executives, has refurbished and handed over the Mothers' Hostel at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) to the management of the hospital .

Repair works on the hostel cost GH₵20,000 and included painting works, provision of furniture, sanitation facilities and installation of television sets.

Funding for the project came from proceeds that had accrued from the club’s fundraising activities for its health and education initiatives.

Background

The Mother’s Hostel at the KBTH is an accommodation facility for mothers who visit the hospital for their health care needs. The hostel has catered for the lodging needs of many women in the country in particular and the West African sub-region as a whole.

However, over the years conditions in the hostel deteriorated due to lack of maintenance, a situation that posed a huge challenge to users of the facility.

The Zonta Club, therefore, took up the responsibility to refurbish the facility in order to create a conducive atmosphere for users.

Presentation

Last Week Friday, a ceremony was held on the premises of the hospital at which the refurbished facility was handed over to the management of the hospital.

The President of the club, Mrs Esther Amoah, officially handed over the refurbished facility to Deputy Directors of Nursing Services, Dr Victoria Adabeyeri, and Mrs Joyce Oppong, both of the Department of Child Health of the KBTH.

‘Mothers key’

Mrs Amoah observed that mothers played a critical role in child upbringing and family health, requiring that emphasis was put on creating conditions that made life easy for them even in situations of seeking for medical care.

According to her, in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs), it was pertinent that pragmatic steps were taken to promote quality health care for mothers and children.

She entreated managers of the hostel to take proper care of the facility by adhering to good sanitation practices.

“Users of the hostel should ensure that they adopt practised good hygiene as a means of making the facility serve the purpose for which it was established,” she added.

Appreciation

Dr Adabeyeri thanked the Zonta Club for its kind gesture and described it as timely.

She said the upgrade of the facility was a huge relief to managers of the hostel since it would improve the quality of healthcare that was provided to mothers and children.

She called on the public to take a cue from the example set by the Zonta Club and support the welfare needs of mothers and children lodge at the Mother’s Hostel of the hospital.
