Youth urged to support Africa’s development

The Vice-President of Institutional Advancement at the African University College of Communications (AUCC), Professor Kofi Asare Opoku, has underscored the need for the youth in the country to make effective use of their talents to positively improve conditions in the country and Africa as a whole.

He said the current state of Africa was not the best. Therefore, Ghanaian youth ought to rise to the occasion, leadership positions and work towards improving the status quo.

Precious gift

Prof. Opoku, who made the call at a networking event in Accra, mentioned that young people constituted a precious gift to Africa, and with their imagination, optimism and idealism, they could take the continent to realms which were unimaginable.

He used the parable of sheep and lions, saying: “An army of sheep, led by a lion, can defeat an army of lions led by a sheep” to provoke a mass of young entrepreneurs to rise up to the challenge.

According to him, that proverb told a remarkable leadership story which could effectively accomplish what would otherwise be thought to be utterly impossible.

According to him, the youth in Africa could not afford to be ignorant of the great achievements of the forebears of the continent, and the knowledge of the history could also give the needed confidence to sell Ghana and Africa as a whole.

“It was from the African continent that all humanity started and Africa’s contribution to human civilisation and culture can only be denied by those who refuse to acknowledge it,” he observed.

Networking event

The one-day networking event was organised by the Webster University, in partnership with the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in Accra.

The Campus Director of Webster University Ghana, Madam Christa E. Sanders, noted that Webster University was a proud supporter of President Obama’s YALI.

“At Webster University, we believe in investing in the next generation of leaders and we have partnered YALI in showcasing to the world that Africa has some of the strongest, brightest and able young leaders in the world,” he added.
