Youth advised against vices at festivals

A traditional ruler has advised the country’s youth against using festive occasions to indulge in social vices, and rather promote community development during such times.

Odeefour Afankwa III, the Paramount Chief of Breman Essiam Tradional Area, said social vices such as premarital sex, wee smoking and alcohol abuse undermined the progress of young people.

The chief said this while addressing a durbar organised as part of this year’s annual Akwambo festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of Breman Essiam in the Central Region recently.

The durbar was meant to raise funds to support activities of the Breman Essiam Education and Vocational Fund.

Odeefour Afankwa, who is also the President of the Breman Essiam Tradional Council, asked the youth to always pursue productive ventures such as education, vocational training or apprenticeship and work.

“Those of you still schooling or pursuing vocations should study hard to enhance your future life,” he told the youth and asked parents to support their children and prepare them to be responsible adults.

“Invest in your children’s education and desist from spending all your money on personal belongings,” he told the parents.

Odeefour Afankwa, having dealt with the youth issues, appealed to the government to construct the Nkwatanum Assin Manso road for easy access to Assin Foso and other places from his area.

He also asked for the tarring of streets in the town, the rehabilitation of the Nkwatanum Health Centre and suitable accommodation and other facilities for the police personnel at the Nkwatanum Police Station.

The Paramount Chief announced the availability of a 21-acre land, and appealed to churches and other stakeholders to access it free of charge to establish a senior high school or a nursing training college at Breman Essiam.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Mr Peter Light Koomson, enumerated the various projects the Mills/Mahama administration had undertaken in the traditional area since 2009, including connecting some communities to the national grid, provision of free transformers and 500 meters to boost power supply.

He said the government had plans to undertake more projects, including the construction of a cocoa depot in the town.

Officials of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) used the occasion to show a documentary to educate the people on the dangers of substance abuse.

The Member of Parliament for the area and Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Cassile Ato Forson, donated GH¢1000 to the education fund, while the donation by the New Patriotic Party Parliamentary candidate for the area, Mr Ransford K. Nyarkoh, was not announced.

In all, the fundraising yielded GH¢5000.

Dignitaries at the function included the District Director of Education, Madam Macaiver Ivy Quaye, Mr Amos Arthur Darko, the Managing Director of Rich Water Company at Ajumako, the Twafohen of the traditional area, Nana Oguamon Atwer III and the Omankrado, Nana Obo III.
