Work begins on Brofuyedru-Adumasa road

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr John Alexander Ackon, has cut the sod for construction works to begin on a new road connecting Brofoyedru to Adumasa through Ofoase in the Atwima Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti Region.

The 18-km road, which is being constructed by YKB Construction firm, is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Mr Ackon said the road was being financed through the Enhanced Road Fund, managed by the Feeder Roads Department and targeted at bringing development to rural areas in the country.

He said when the road was completed, it would open up towns in the area to businesses and bring about enhanced economic activities.

Mr Ackon added that the road had historic perspectives, since it was the first time a road was being constructed to link up the towns.

He was hopeful that the road which had been on the drawing board for a very long time would provide job opportunities for the youth, at least in the interim, and reduce the mass rush of the youth to Kumasi for non-existing jobs.

The contractor for the project, Mr Stephen Kwaku Boafo, promised to complete work on the road before the 18-month deadline.

He said the company had already moved to site and begun levelling the ground and was planning to begin the construction of gutters.

Bill

The Ashanti regional minister also gave a hint that Parliament was ready to pass the Affirmative Action Bill by the end of the year as a means of granting equal opportunities to both men and women.

He said the bill had gone before the Cabinet and had also been placed before Parliament in spite of the push by various groups, especially women’s groups, to have it passed early.

BECE results

Mr Ackon, who was once the Deputy Minister for Gender and Social Protection, said the 51 per cent pass by female candidates in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) indicated that given the opportunity, women stood the chance of doing well.

He said when the bill was passed, it would present equal opportunities for both sexes and help bridge the gap between males and females at the tertiary level.
