Martha Dziwornu, a trader, was charged with murder when she appeared before the court, presided over by Mr James Kojo Botah.

Martha’s plea was not taken, and was subsequently remanded into police custody.

Counsel for Martha, Mr Seidu Nasigri, in his submission, prayed the court to discharge Martha because the facts of the case did not support the charge but Mr Botah was of the opinion that it was up to the prosecution to prove Martha’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Inspector John Gohoho said the complainant in the case was Alfred Aseidu Agyei, an assemblyman for the Avenor Electoral Area.

He told the court that the deceased, Kwadwo Boakye, was a 34-year-old mechanic at Abeka.

According to the prosecution, on July 24, 2016, a misunderstanding ensued between Martha and Boakye and in the course of the exchanges, they both insulted each other and were separated by some witnesses in the case.

In the presence of the witnesses, Martha threatened the deceased, saying she would engage the services of thugs from Nima to teach him a lesson.

The prosecutor told the court since that day, Boakye was not seen again until July 27, 2016 when his body was found floating on the Odaw river at Avenor by Agyei.

Inspector Gohoho said Agyei reported the matter to the police and a team of policemen were despatched to the scene and the body was removed and deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

The prosecutor said careful inspection of the body revealed various assault marks.

He said on August 10, 2016, a post-mortem examination was performed on the body of Boakye by a pathologist who gave the cause of death as a blunt head injury.

Inspector Gohoho said on August 17, 2016, Martha was arrested for questioning. After preliminary investigation, she was arraigned before the court to facilitate further investigation into the case.
