Madam Oleki requires dialysis three times a week for six months, at a cost of GH¢260 per session, before a kidney transplant could be performed.

According to a doctor’s report, the patient, who has been booked for chronic dialysis at the Renal Dialysis Unit-KBTH, has to deposit GH¢10,140 (half the total cost of GH¢20,280) and settle incidental costs for the 13 sessions of dialysis.

Ailment

Mr Jacob Agbasi, an elder brother of Doris, said between April and May last year, Doris feet and other parts of her body started swelling and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

He said they had been to many hospitals before they were finally referred to KBTH, where the dialysis treatment was recommended for her to stay alive and healthy. The dialysis started in June 2016.

Mr Agbasi stated that before his sister’ took ill, she was trading but currently was unable to go about her normal routine.

“Whenever we take her for the dialysis, she is better but whenever we miss it her condition becomes more severe than before. We sometimes miss it because we do not have the funds for the required three times in a week,” he said.

“It is true dialysis does not cure, but before the transplant she needs it to keep her going.”

Mr Agbasi is, therefore, appealing to the public to help Doris.
