The support was provided under the WFP’s asset creation initiative to help end perennial food insecurity and improve livelihoods.

The beneficiaries  who are mainly farmers from Gbajula and Sinesile received between GHc148.35 and GHc200 to improve upon their farming and other economic activities.

Project

The four-year project, which will end in 2016, is the initiative of the WFP’s Country Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the beneficiary district assemblies.

It is being implemented in three regions in the country. They are the Northern, Upper West and Brong Ahafo.

So far, 17,000 households have received cash incentives of GHc2.67 million since the programme’s commencement in 2012.

Benefits

The Asset Creation Programme Officer at the WFP, Madam Kristie Struthers, said access to water was the most important community asset, since it formed the basis of all activities.

She said it was for this reason that members of the communities were being trained in the construction of dams and dugouts in their respective communities to reduce the hazards of travelling long distances in search of water.

The officer further explained that the cash payment would enable the beneficiaries to invest in their farms and other small businesses to improve on their wellbeing.

The Communication Officer at the WFP, Madam Vera Boohene, indicated that the WFP sought  to improve on the lives of people in deprived areas.

The Asset Focal Person of the project at Gbanjula, Mr Adams Abdul Hameed, said the cash incentive would also enable the beneficiaries to improve on their farming activities, pay their children’s fees and embark on other commercial activities.

Appreciation

A beneficiary, Madam Memunatu Abdulai, a groundnut farmer, commended the WFP for the initiative and promised to use the funds for the intended purpose to transform her family’s life.
